The Difference in Hop Creek Farms Beer Offerings: A Guide to Drinking Our Beers
There is something particular about cracking open a cold beer when you can see the field it grew near, or watch the Highland cows wander past while you sip. At Hop Creek Farms, the beer has always been part of something larger: a working farm, a family story, a spot along the Sea to Sky that feels like it belongs to the community rather than to a brand. It is the kind of place people discover and immediately want to share with someone else.
But if you have ever stood at our bar trailer or farm market and felt a flicker of uncertainty about which beer to order, this guide is for you. Not every person who visits is a craft beer regular, and that is completely fine. Here is a plain and honest look at each brew we make, what makes it what it is, and how to figure out which one suits you best. Take your time with it. The idea is to help you feel at home, not to overwhelm you with information.
The Big Divide: Understanding the Types of Beer
Almost every beer in the world falls into one of two families: ales and lagers. The difference comes down to yeast and fermentation temperature. Ales are brewed with yeast that works at warmer temperatures and tends to produce beers with more complexity and character, often with fruity or floral notes. Lagers are fermented at cooler temperatures and more slowly, which gives them a cleaner, crisper finish. Once you understand that, navigating a beer list becomes much more intuitive.
Neither is better. They are simply different ways of making something delicious, suited to different moments and different people.
At Hop Creek Farms, we brew both, and within each family, we offer more than one style. Here is how they break down.
The Lagers: Clean, Crisp, and Easy to Love
Highland Lager (5% ABV)
Our Highland Lager is named for the Highland cattle that share this farm with us. It is a clean, refreshing brew for people who want something honest and uncomplicated after a long day on the trails or a walk around the property to explore what we have growing here.
Lagers like this one are the most widely consumed style of beer in the world, and for good reason. The cool fermentation process smooths out the rough edges and lets the malt and water do quiet, reliable work. If you usually drink mainstream commercial lagers and are wondering whether craft beer is for you, this is a great place to start. It is the kind of beer you can come back to all day, and it never lets you down.
Jackass Pilsner (5.3% ABV)
A pilsner is a specific type of lager, originally from Central Europe, and it tends to be slightly more hop-forward than a standard pale lager. Pilsners are still crisp and refreshing, but they carry a faint herbal or floral bitterness that gives them a bit more personality. Think of it as a lager with something on its mind.
Our Jackass Pilsner is named for Jonny Ringo and Misty, our mini woolly donkeys, who are reliably stubborn and entirely lovable. The beer reflects something of that spirit: easy to drink, but not boring. It is a small-batch pilsner brewed on-site with a fun personality and a stubborn refusal to be forgettable. If you are the kind of person who loves a good mix of flavour and easy drinkability, this one is worth grabbing.
The Ales: More Character, More Range
Berkshire Ale (5.5% ABV)
A pale ale is where a lot of people meet craft beer for the first time, and it remains one of the best ways to learn what you actually like. It sits in the middle of the flavour spectrum: malty enough to feel full and satisfying, hoppy enough to have some character, but not so bitter that it challenges you. Pale ales are balanced by design, and that balance is what makes them such a great all-day beer.
Our Berkshire Ale has a crisp, piney character with citrus notes and a West Coast sensibility. West Coast pale ales lean slightly more toward the hops than their British counterparts, which means you will notice a clean, light bitterness alongside the malt. It pairs well with food and works for a wide variety of occasions. People who have never loved craft beer often discover they love this one.
Alpine IPA (6% ABV)
An IPA, or India Pale Ale, is a style that leans heavily on hops. Hops are the flowers used in brewing that contribute bitterness, aroma, and flavour. An IPA takes those qualities and turns them up, creating something with real presence. Depending on the hop varieties used, you might discover notes of citrus, pine, tropical fruit, or floral character.
Our Alpine IPA brings together New Zealand hops, known for their bright, tropical character, with West Coast brewing craft. The result keeps the bitterness clean and the finish dry. At 6% ABV, it has a bit more body than our lagers and pale ale, and the hop aroma adds a whole new dimension to the experience. If you enjoy bold, aromatic beers, this is the one to reach for. It is a beer that rewards those who pay attention to what they are drinking.
Black Angus Nitro Stout (4.6% ABV)
If you have ever had a Guinness, you have had a stout. Stouts are dark beers brewed with roasted malts that give them their deep colour and their characteristic flavours of coffee, chocolate, and toasted grain. They have a reputation for being heavy, but that is not always the case.
Our Black Angus Nitro Stout is a great example of how that reputation can mislead people. It uses nitrogen instead of carbon dioxide to carbonate the beer, which creates smaller, finer bubbles and a noticeably creamier mouthfeel. The head is thick and persistent in a way that feels almost luxurious. Despite all that, this beer sits at just 4.6% ABV, making it more approachable than its appearance suggests. It is named for our Black Angus cattle, and like them, it is built solid but easy to be around.
If you have historically avoided dark beers because you assumed they would be heavy or strongly bitter, this is the brew that might change your mind. Nitrogen carbonation softens the bitterness considerably, and the roasted notes add depth rather than weight. It is one of those beers that teaches people something about what they love.
A Note on the New Zealand Hop Beer
We are also pouring a beer built around New Zealand hops, which are particularly prized for their zesty, citrus-forward character. New Zealand hops like Nelson Sauvin bring notes of white grape, lime, and tropical fruit that you do not find in more traditional North American or European varieties. This beer has a pillowy body and a wave of tropical-fruit character that gives it a soft, juicy quality, even as the flavour is bright and lively.
It is a fun and unexpected addition to the mix, and a good choice for anyone who is curious and open to something a little different. The people who discover this one often add it to their regular order.
