Ingredients
- (2 1/2 lbs) Beef Round Roast
- (1 tbsp) Canola Oil
- (1 clove) Garlic (minced)
- (2 tsp) Basil (dried)
- (1 tsp) Salt
- (1 tsp) Dried Rosemary (crushed)
- (1/2 tsp) Pepper
- (1) Medium Onion (chopped)
- (1 tsp) Beef Bouillon Granules
- (1 cup) Brewed Coffee
- (3/4 cup) Water
- (1/4 cup) All-Purpose Flour
- (1/4 cup) Cold Water
Directions
Start with a Dutch oven and heat up some canola oil over medium heat. This is where the magic begins! Once the oil is hot, carefully place your roast in the pan and let it brown on all sides. This step is crucial because it locks in those savoury flavours and gives the meat a beautiful, rich colour. Once it’s nicely browned, remove the roast from the pan and set it aside for a moment.
In a small bowl, mix together minced garlic with your seasonings: basil, a pinch of salt, rosemary, and black pepper. Sprinkle this great mixture generously over the roast, making sure to coat it well. This is where the roast starts to get its personality!
Take the same pan you used for the roast. Add the chopped onion and sauté it until it’s tender and translucent. The onions will soak up all those delicious drippings left in the pan, adding even more flavour to your dish. Once the onions are ready, stir in some beef bouillon, brewed coffee, and water. Yes, you read that right—coffee! It adds a deep, rich flavour that complements the beef beautifully.
Return the roast to the pan, nestling it into the mixture. Bring everything to a gentle boil, then reduce the heat and cover the pot. Let it simmer away for about 2-1/2 hours. This slow cooking process is key to achieving that melt-in-your-mouth tenderness. You can use this time to relax, catch up on a show, or even prepare some sides!
Once the time is up, carefully remove the roast from the pan and cover it with foil to keep it warm. Let it rest for about 10 minutes before slicing. This resting period allows the juices to redistribute throughout the meat, ensuring each slice is juicy and flavourful.
Note
To make a delicious gravy to go with your roast! Take a small bowl, mix together some flour and cold water until it’s smooth. This will be your thickening agent. Stir this mixture into the reserved cooking juices in the pan. Bring it to a boil while stirring constantly, and watch as it thickens up beautifully in just 1-2 minutes.
Now you’re ready to serve! Slice the roast and drizzle that rich gravy over the top. This classic roast beef is not just a meal; it’s a comforting dish that brings everyone together. Enjoy every bite!
